A Good Man Is Hard to Find

My honest initial reaction: what the hell was that?? And after trying to understand the deeper meaning, I have to admit I still don’t really get it. On the surface, it was a compelling read. It was surprisingly light and even funny for much of it. Until, of course, it wasn’t.

I’ve read about the underlying themes of hypocrisy and redemption, and I did pick up on some of that. The grandmother is self-righteous and holier-than-thou while behaving pretty selfishly, while the Misfit is a known sinner with more spiritual insight than you might expect. That contrast was interesting, but I can’t say all the religious symbolism totally clicked for me.
