I’m actually surprised Śakuntalā never became a Disney movie in the 20th century, during the era when Disney seemed to be pulling from every major source of classic literature, folklore, myth, and fairy tale it could find.
It has all the right ingredients such as a beautiful young woman living in the forest, a king who falls in love, a comic side kick, romance complicated by differences in status, a magical token of recognition, and an eventual happy ending. You’d just need to sand out the rough edges about the young woman being abandoned while pregnant and some of the heavier emotional and classist elements, but it’s basically all there.
On the topic of the comic side kicks, Vidūṣaka is impressively funny. He has a ton of great zingers in Act 2. Also, the sections in verse are really lovely.
