A riveting read, with bonus points for style and character development. I was worried the single-sentence structure would just feel like a gimmick meant to impress literary critics, but it really worked. From the very beginning, it’s easy to be swept up in the book’s relentless, muddy chaos. And despite being one continuous sentence, the frequent paragraph breaks make it still very readable for the layman.
The characters are exceptionally well drawn, especially Bagger. I felt like I understood his “scumbag who is secretly decent and just battling his own demons” persona immediately. The prose matches the story perfectly: urgent, chaotic, and vulgar, with a strong undercurrent of fear and unease.
The plot is mysterious and dreamlike. It somehow manages to feel like a fresh take on WWI and the dehumanizing machinery of war. I hesitated to give it the full five stars because I’m still not entirely sure what the hell happened at the very end, but it had such eerie vibes and stuck with me long afterward, so I think it did its job.
