Reading Jane Austen immediately after Virginia Woolf felt like I had turned on easy mode. There was suddenly a narrator explicitly describing what was happening and what everyone was thinking. It was a nice change of pace.
I wouldn’t say Regency romance is a favorite genre of mine, but Pride and Prejudice is a great book nonetheless. The characters are strong and memorable. Austen seems to have a talent for creating characters who are annoying in very specific and relatable ways. We get insightful commentary about marriage, class, and social expectations, but with a lot of humor throughout.
Mostly, it’s just very well constructed and pleasant to read. Everything comes together satisfyingly in the end, and even though you mostly know where it’s going, getting there is still enjoyable. Be wary of first impressions.
